CSA Harvest: May 29, 2011

New this week: grass-fed (naturally 93% lean) ground beef from a new supplier, a bumpy & fun variety of cucumber, broccoli, and an easy and filling hamburger curry onion pie recipe.

Choices: We got to choose 2 summer squash and I picked one of each type. In addition, we had the choice between scarlet queen turnips, red russian kale, and rainbow chard. Because it is probably the last time we'll have kale (summer heat is not good for this cool-weather leafy green), I picked kale.

Small Farms CSA on Wordpress  New this week: yellow crook neck squash, zucchini, fennel, Yukon gold potatoes, a delicious and refreshing fennel salad recipe, a reconsideration of the heirarchy of my favorite turnip varieties, and an amazing recipe for potatoes, eggs, onions, basil & goat cheese.

 New this week: scarlet queen turnips, a whole chicken from a new supplier, goat cheese chevre, some tips on how to store fresh goat cheese, and a peek inside the farm with neat factoids gleaned from our farm tour.

CSA Harvest: May 8, 2011

Small Farms CSA on Wordpress New this week: kohl rabi (super yeah!), red Russian kale, 12 dozen eggs, salad radishes, green garlic, a very satisfiying soup recipe (see the kale's Cooking section for details), and new ways to store greens to keep them yummy for longer.

We start the biweekly meat share next week with a whole chicken! The eggs we'll be getting biweekly, as well, but on opposite weeks from the meat. Our every-four-weeks share of goat cheese chevre from Decimal Place Farm will also be appearing in the next couple of weeks.

 

CSA Harvest: May 1, 2011 (We're back!)

New this week: This is first portion of the 2011 spring/summer season's share, so everything is new, especially strawberries.

We got to choose 2 bunches from a number of lettuce varieties.  We will start the meat share in 2 weeks, and might have eggs next week.

Small Farms CSA on Wordpress We are getting delicious, healthy food through our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in Atlanta and (bonus!) supporting our local farmers.

Each week last Fall, I posted pictures and details about what we received from the Small Farms CSA (run by the Love is Love farm) in our regular 13-week session ($350 produce + $100 meat).

Local, organic produce share for $350 from the Small Farms CSA (Fall 2010)

A summary of the goodies that we got in our Fall/Winter share from our our local CSA (Small Farms, run by the Love is Love farm).

As Joe said, it truly was "the season of roots and greens"!

I've broken the produce out by type of vegetable and, as you can see by the total numbers at the top, we got A HUGE AMOUNT of leafy greens, roots, and vegetable fruits. I've also tried to include some of my thoughts on each item, either recipes or storage or just general reflections.

Local, organic meat share for $100 from the Small Farms CSA (Fall 2010)

Total: 6 lbs. ground beef, 8 lbs. pork sausage & 2 hens.

New this week: carrots & sugarloaf endive.

This is last portion of the official season's share...but we've signed up for another 4 weeks for $100, so we'll get to keep eating this awesome stuff for another month!
